Judges on the Food Network show "Chopped."

I spent most Tuesdays a few years ago watching the show MasterChef, where home chefs compete to become a Gordon Ramsey-dubbed “culinary master” for a large chunk of change, and a cookbook deal. The show’s okay — interesting enough to hold my attention most nights, but not dynamic enough to keep me from flipping around during commercials … like one Tuesday in 2011 when the What Not To Wear season premiere aired at the same time. (You know how much we like What Not To Wear around here!) Gordon Ramsey’s all about entertainment, simultaneously making us laugh, cringe, and nod our…

20 Gingerbread Recipes To Pin!

Here we are, mid way through December, and less than ten days until Christmas. Weekends are being spent scurrying around finding those last (or first) Christmas presents, baking homemade treats, and figuring out holiday meal menus … all while simultaneously managing the regular weekend to-dos and chores — or letting those slide in favor of festive projects. Gingerbread is the “pumpkin spice” of the December holiday season, with everything from bread to lattes carrying its robust and aromatic flavor. I blame Starbucks (in the very best way) for conditioning us to think like this. Mmm… Ginger itself is such…

This easy pumpkin pie is the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving feast! For more than a few years I’ve been selected “pie maker” for both families’ Thanksgiving dinners. Thankfully (pun intended) we don’t try and squeeze our meals in on one day anymore. As a child I grew up doing that, and I loved every minute of the hustle-bustle from one grandparents’ house to the other, eating all the things, and enjoying the merriment that went along with each stop. As an adult with my own kids now, the mere thought of racing around on a holiday exhausts me,…

5 Bad Airport Habits You Need To Stop Right Now!

Last week I had to travel to Illinois for a two-day business trip. I don’t travel frequently, but every other month or so I find myself in an airport headed somewhere west of here, to meetings, conferences, or something else job-related. The closest airport to me is in Baltimore, and unfortunately none of the airlines I’m able to use for said work trips have direct flights from there to my most frequent destination in Illinois. (Read: not Chicago.) This means I spend a significant amount of time in airports, consumed by layovers. It’s not all bad, really. The stress that comes with a…

Liza won the Food Lion Frugal Cook-Off in 2013 — get a behind the scenes look!

It turns out July 2013 was a very busy month for me, filled with all sorts of good stuff including my birthday and a trip to visit my sister in Brooklyn, where we gorged on all things food and I tried out for the show Home Cooks on Food Network. But the OTHER amazing thing that happened was a little thing called the Food Lion Frugal Cook-Off in Baltimore, Maryland. I was approached that June to participate in the cook-off with a bunch of other local bloggers, two of whom would be on my team. The only information we were given was…
